10 Expert Tips to Transform Your Home Into a Fall Escape

Fall Decor
From pumpkin spiced lattes to vibrant fall hues, it's the time of year to embrace the comfort and cosiness of the season and transform your home into a fall wonderland.

To help you take your home from a summer sanctuary to a festive fall haven, our expert, Ash Read interiors expert and founder of Living Cozy, has put together his top 10 seasonal decor tips.

1. Spice up your flower display

Dried flowers and grasses, also known as 'everlastings', can be used to make beautiful fall displays. The low maintenance flowers are also perfect for those that struggle to maintain fresh flowers. The most popular dried plants this fall include eucalyptus, roses, helichrysum and pampas grass.

Ash suggests “If you don’t fancy purchasing dried flowers you could always have a go at drying your own. Hang your tied flowers upside down in a well-ventilated, dark room for 2-3 weeks. Once dried, spray with unscented hairspray for protection and arrange!”

2. Add a pop of colour to your home

Neutral tones have been dominating the interior scene in 2021, however, to really make a change, why not introduce a pop of colour into your home for the fall season. The classic fall colour palette references shades of red, orange and yellow, mimicking colour the transformations we see outside. Ash says: “A pop of colour can easily be introduced by switching out your sofa cushions, or investing in a piece of colourful art.”

3. Decorate with candles

Fall candles

The spookiest season of the year requires some good mood lighting, and candles can certainly help to create the perfect atmosphere. Not only are candles versatile, with designs to fit every room, but they also create a cosy ambience and the essential oils within them can help to relax and lift your spirits.

Why not opt for scented candles and truly transform your home into a fall sense sensation. Ash comments: “Fall candle favourites include pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg. If you don’t like the idea of burning real candles you can always opt for a flameless candle instead, designed to imitate the warm glow of candlelight.”

4. Layer up on fabrics

Embracing a mixture of textures and tones can bring warmth and comfort to your home. Layers are synonymous with the fall season; from fluffy rugs to patterned pillows, textiles have a cosy appeal, and can even help to add a sense of personality to your home.

Ash explains: “Layering throws is an easy way to incorporate different textures, and not only will they help to keep you warm but they can also quickly revamp a piece of furniture.”

5. Get creative with fall tablescaping

Fall Tablescape

Tablescaping is an interior hack that has quickly grown in popularity this year. The modern term sees tables decorated with an abundance of accessories, including perfectly placed crockery, fall flower arrangements, flickering candles and pumpkin place settings. Take a look at #tablescaping on Pinterest for some great inspiration! You could even have a go at DIYing your own table centerpiece, incorporating foraged foliage and fairy lights.

6. Work with natural textures

One of 2021’s biggest interior trends has been the incorporation of natural elements and textures, and fall definitely provides the ideal opportunity to get creative. Pinecones, conkers, nuts and even apples can be used to decorate your home. Whether you choose to spray paint them, add touches of glitter or leave them natural, decorating for fall can be easy when you bring the outdoors in!

7. Add a little bouclé

‘Bouclé’, or ‘teddy bear’ fabrics are a firm Instagram favourite this season, with over 170K posts dedicated to the fleecy textures. Derived from the French word meaning “curled”, bouclé is the textile of the moment and is commonly used for upholstery, throws and drapes - adding a ‘snuggly’ yet ‘sophisticated’ style to your home.

8. Have a go at doorscaping

This year’s new craze is fall ‘doorscaping’, with household names such as Kourtney Kardashian and Zoe Sugg leading the way. Ash explains: “Doorscaping can be as simple as adding a fall-themed wreath or doormat to your front door, or if you’re going all out this season, entirely dressing your porch with jack ‘o’ lanterns, hay barrels and dried corn stalks.” You can be as OTT or as subtle as you wish with this trend.

9. Introduce minimalist wallpapers

Plain and minimalist wallpaper designs are becoming more desirable for décor enthusiasts, and they can be a great way to completely transform your home for the colder seasons. Minimalist wallpaper doesn’t have to be completely plain, Ash explains: “ Artistic wallpaper can give your room personality, without stealing the focus. Scandinavian-inspired wallpaper is the favourite style this fall, with focus on simple patterns and soft, muted colour palettes”.

10. Don’t forget the Jack ‘o’ Lanterns!

Jack ‘o’ Lanterns typically take centre stage when it comes to fall decor, and this year is no exception. Whether you choose to incorporate a classic jack ‘o’ lantern theme, carving or painting spooky creations, or you choose to decorate with subtle ceramic jack ‘o’ lantern displays, the seasonal squash is always a must-have for fall interior.

With fall in full swing, we’re embracing everything that the new season has to offer and I thought this might be of interest to you and your readers. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need anything else such as images, or if you have any questions - happy to help!
