Buying a sofa should be fun. But it can quickly become a chore — and quite stressful. You have to worry about whether it will fit in your space, how long it will take to arrive, and whether it'll even be comfortable to sit on.
Allform wants to change things.
The New York-based furniture brand sells its sofas exclusively online and offers highly-customizable, modular sofas that can change and adapt to your needs. It's also one of the most popular brands on Living Cozy, so when we had the chance to get our hands on a sofa and give it a test drive, we jumped at it.
Here's a detailed review of the Allform sofa, all the way from how to order one to how comfortable it is for relaxing on a Sunday afternoon.
Shopping for a sofa online isn't always a straightforward experience. But Allform's mission is to make buying a sofa online as easy, if not easier, than the existing options.
So instead of having a small number of default options available, Allform lets you customize your Sofa and build something that's a perfect fit for your living space — and with around 500 possible configurations, there's bound to be something for almost everyone.
When you're designing your sofa, you have a vast choice of configurations, from armchairs and loveseats for small spaces to 4-seat double chaise sofas, 8-seat U-shape sectionals, and everything in-between.
And due to Allform's modular design, you can always add to your Sofa over time. So if you want to start out with a 3-seater sectional, you have the option to add extra seats and sections at any time.
Once you've chosen your starting configuration, you then get to select the upholstery from seven fabric options and two leather options. You can also pick from a selection of three hardwood leg finishes and add extras like an ottoman or matching throw pillows to go alongside your Sofa.
We opted to test out 4-Seat Corner Sectional with Charcoal fabric and Natural hardwood legs.
Each Allform Sofa is manufactured in the U.S., which helps the brand to build and ship custom sofas reasonably quickly.
Its goal is to get sofas shipped to you as soon as possible. Currently, on its website, it says sofas will be shipped in 2-4 weeks (though this range can be 1-10 weeks depending on supply chains).
We weren't left waiting too long for our Sofa to arrive — we ordered it on October 15th and it arrived three-and-a-bit weeks later on November 8th.
Another significant benefit of Allform is that it ships its sofas in easy-to-move boxes. The Sofa arrived in six boxes and was delivered right to the door of our second-floor apartment, so no awkward struggles are trying to get the couch through tight doorways or hallways in oour building. The boxes were quite large, though, so we decided to slide them from the hallway into our living room.
Building the Sofa was a little more complicated than I'd expected. But I think that was because we had a 4-Seat Corner Sectional — I'd imagine the 3-Seat Sofa would be a little simpler to put together. If we had opted for a sofa any larger than the 4-Seat, I might have considered hiring some help from TaskRabbit.
The Allform sofa has a versatile look and modern design that can work nicely in most settings and interior design styles, and it was right at home in the living room. The choice of fabrics also gives you the power to choose whether you'd like the Sofa to be the focal point of your room with a bright, vibrant red, or maybe something a little more subdued like a gray.
Allform designs its sofas to be the perfect spot to chill and relax. Its cushions are made from high-grade foam and fiber and which creates a medium seat firmness — it's not quite cloud-like, but at the same time, it's also not too firm.
One of my favorite things about the Sofa is the seat depth. My wife and I love to sit back on the couch, drink coffee, and read on the weekends. The Allform is perfect for that.
One of my favorite things about the Sofa is the seat depth. My wife and I love to sit back on the couch, drink coffee, and read on the weekends. The Allform is perfect for that. And because of the sectional's L-shape design, the corner section is a fantastic spot to relax and put your feet up.
And when it comes to having guests, the Allfom delivered there too. My parents came to visit over the Thanksgiving weekend, and all four of us could comfortably sit on the Sofa without feeling squished together.
The performance fabric was also excellent. We haven't had any spillages on it yet, but it feels like it'll be easy to clean. I'm curious how the leather sofa would feel and how that upholstery might impact the softness or firmness of the cushions.
As the Allform sofa is designed to be easy to take apart and put together, we moved it across Austin to our video studio and asked interior designer, Bri Ussery of East co. Studio, to join us and give us an overview of the piece:
The 4-Seat Corner Sectional we reviewed retails for around $2,245. Due to the sheer number of configurations available, Allform sofa prices can vary depending on what you need, but here are a few price points for various price points:
Every Sofa comes with free delivery and a 100-day trial.
Understanding how comfy a sofa is before buying is one of the most challenging parts of buying a couch online. As I mentioned earlier, the Allform seat cushions felt just right for me – not too firm and not too soft.
Interior designer Bri Urssey described the firmness as "pretty firm, but not uncomfortable firm. It doesn't envelop you like some of those big pillowy sofas. It's a really nice medium firmness that is very comfortable."
Allform offers its sofas in seven fabric options and two leather options. Here's a complete list of the available options:
Performance fabrics: Light Gray, Sand, Dark Blue, Charcoal, Teal, Amber, Red.
Leather: Whiskey, Dark Smoke.
If you're unsure about which option you'd like to go with, you can order free swatches from Allform's website. The cushion and exterior fabric/leather also come with a three-year limited warranty.
Each Allform Sofa has a hardwood frame made from kiln-dried maple and poplar hardwood ply boards and tempered steel suspension.
Its seat cushions use a high-grade polyfoam. All foam used is CertiPur-US Certified, so it's made without ozone depleters, flame retardants, heavy metals, and low VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
When it comes to upholstery, its performance fabric is treated with an eco-friendly stain-resistant application. It performs over 3.5 better than what's considered "heavy-duty" in industry-standard rub tests. Allform also uses high-quality top-grain protected leather.
Allform sofas are manufactured in the USA, which helps to keep their shipping times down. Allform aims to ship all of its sofas within 1-10 weeks and will often say the expected shipping times as you design your Sofa on its website.
As I mentioned above, we ordered on October 15th and received the sofa on November 8th.
Allform's return policy is one of the most generous in the furniture industry. You get 100 days to try our your Allform sofa at home and if you don't love it, you can return it. Each sofa also comes with a lifetime warranty.
Allform is a sofa-in-a-box brand founded by the team behind Helix Sleep. Its sofas are designed to help you enjoy your lazy time at home more — binging your favorite series, reading a good book, or taking one of those Sunday afternoon naps.
Allform has a keen eye on sustainability throughout its design and manufacturing process. Its US-based manufacturing partner is a charter member of the Sustainable Furniture Council (SFC). The wood used in its frames is domestically sourced from Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) certified vendors.
Where possible, Allform also tries to use recycled materials in its sofas, and all metal components consist of at least 95% recycled steel or aluminum.
The upholstery paddings across each Sofa are made from 100% recycled material.
The Allform Sofa is a marvelous piece of furniture. It offered a perfect, cozy spot for us to sit in and relax after a day at work and is ideal for putting our feet up with a good book at the weekend.
The only downside was that the Sofa was a little harder to put together than expected, but it fitted really nicely into our living space once it was made. The seat depth was probably my favorite feature, and the corner seat quickly became the most converted spot in our home.
If you're looking for a new sofa, Allform is definitely worth checking out.
