How to Find the Perfect Sectional for your Patio / Outdoor Space
Consider Your Space
The size of your outdoor space is one of the most important factors to consider when buying an outdoor sectional. If you choose a piece that's too large, then your outdoor space will feel cramped and crowded, but if you opt for one that's too small, it can look awkward and out of place without providing all of the seating that you need.
Fortunately, many outdoor sectionals, including those on this list, feature modular designs that allow you to customize the size and shape to your needs. However, if you're unsure about how the size of a particular sofa will look in your space, you can write down its measurements and use them to lay painter's tape on the ground in the size and shape of the sofa. This should give you a pretty good idea of how well it will fit and what sorts of configurations will work.
If space is a premium, a more flexible alternative would be to use a smaller sofa/loveseat or an outdoor conversation set that can be easily moved around.
The type of material you choose for your outdoor sofa is critical if you want to ensure it can withstand whatever the weather brings its way. "Be certain that any fabric and material in general is rated for outdoors and also something that can be easily cleaned," suggests Yoselin Castro, senior interior designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors.
As for what to look for in a fabric, Castro says that, "One of the best outdoor sectional materials is synthetic resin wicker, specifically the high-density polyethylene type as it’s very low maintenance and incredibly durable. Other furniture materials that are suitable for the outdoors include teak wood, cast aluminum, and steel frame."
Your particular climate also matters. According to Kimberly Richmond, interior designer at White Peony Design, "In the Pacific Northwest, having non-rusting, non-mildewing, quick-drying materials is essential. So when looking at cushions, look for quick-dry foam that drains quickly and allows air to easily pass through the material."
Don't Forget Style
It's definitely important that your outdoor sectional fits your space and has durable, weather-resistant upholstery, but you also want to love the way it looks! It will likely be the biggest piece of outdoor or patio furniture you own, so it makes a major impact on your overall aesthetic.
Thankfully, it's easy to find stylish outdoor sectionals for virtually any aesthetic leaning, whether you're rocking a layered boho look or a streamlined contemporary design. Before committing to a sofa for the long haul, though, you might want to consider just how trendy it is. Trends that look great today might be outdated tomorrow, so for bigger furniture items, it's safer to go with less trendy and more timeless pieces that will look fresh for years to come.
And when it comes to accessorizing your new outdoor patio sectional, Jan Rutgers, co-owner of JANGEORGe Interiors and Furniture says you should think about it in the same way you would an indoor soda. "Outdoor design should be just like indoor design, but with more durable and weather-resistant options," he says. When choosing outdoor accessories, you need to be comfortable, but what matters the most is that all of your pieces need to be built to last. Use outdoor blankets and throw pillows to style our outdoor sectional. Just be sure the materials are meant for outdoor use." Outdoor rugs can also add another dimension to you space and make your backyard feel more like an indoor living space.
Outdoor Sectional FAQs
What’s the Difference Between a Sectional and an Outdoor Sofa?
"A sectional is a sofa made by joining two or more sections in different configurations. Although they can come in different sizes, sectionals are usually on the larger size, providing lots of comfortable space to lounge," says Kimberly Richards. A standard outdoor sofa, on the other hand, usually features just one piece and therefore only has one configuration.
How Can I Care for my Outdoor Furniture?
The right way to care for your sofa depends on the type of upholstery you have, but most weather-resistant fabrics feature similar care guidelines. According to Mike Fretto, "Covering your outdoor furniture is like parking your car in a garage—it’s the easiest way to protect your investment and keep it looking fresh for a long time."
Fretto also suggests, "cleaning dirt and debris regularly, spot treating stains as they happen, and deep cleaning at the end of the season." You can also make it easier on yourself by buying outdoor furniture with removable, machine-washable covers that you can toss in the washing machine — cushion covers can also help to protect your furniture against the elements when it's not in use.
