Here's a secret...

Storage containers are the superstars behind most Instagram-worthy homes. They can be used anywhere and everywhere — from stackable storage boxes for your home office accessories and wicker baskets for your laundry room supplies to a small basket set for toy storage in the nursery.

And whether you want decorative storage containers that match your home decor or something more practical, your options are endless.

In this article, we’ll highlight some of the best baskets for home organization in any space. And you might just find some clever storage ideas in the process! So keep reading to get inspired.

How Storage Baskets Can Keep Your Home Organized

A place for everything and everything in its place — ideally, if this principle was applied to every room at all times, we'd never deal with the mess.

But how do you ensure everything has its own place? The answer is storage baskets.

“Storage baskets are a multi-functional basic that can be reused and repurposed in areas throughout your home,” said Suze Dowling, Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer at Pattern.

“They’re the unsung heroes of your home! They are traditionally used to display items that benefit from being clearly visible, like pantry items, alongside soft items, though can be very versatile in their utility," explains Dowling. "They offer easy-access storage for items like blankets, books, or laundry. Ultimately, they are a perfect way to corral clutter and provide a designed ‘space’ for items that otherwise may not have a designated home.”

"Ultimately, they are a perfect way to corral clutter and provide a designed ‘space’ for items that otherwise may not have a designated home.”

Organizing baskets are indeed the unsung heroes of your home. Without them, keeping a lived-in space tidy can feel like a nightmare. So, if you feel like you’re fighting an uphill battle to keep your home clean, it might be time to give your storage space a simple upgrade with some baskets.

“Storage baskets are important for organizing because they give your items a specific home,” adds Marla Alt, Founder, and CEO of 123organize. “You know where to put things back once they've been used and where new things go when you purchase them. Baskets and bins are a proactive way of maintaining organization when everything has a place, and you can easily identify where things go.”

Once you have storage baskets for your items, you won't want to go back. And they will definitely make it easier to know where to put things. It's like setting one of the most tedious aspects of home organization to autopilot, and who wouldn't want to do that?

How to Find the Perfect Storage Basket, According to the Pros

Larisa Bright and Pam Meluskey also shared their best practices for purchasing storage baskets and bins with us. Keep reading to learn more from these pro-organizers. Your home will thank you.

“As professional organizers, we often enter people’s homes to see they have previously purchased multiple baskets, but somehow, they still haven’t achieved that sleek, streamlined look," the two commented. “My response is always a simple one: ‘That’s because your baskets have no structural integrity.”

"The trick is – it shouldn't matter what you put inside the baskets, the outside should still look the same.”

"Time after time, we see slouchy canvas baskets being used to store clothing, toys, blankets, hair products, you name it. There is no way around it – these baskets will never appear streamlined. Each one will flop or bulge in a different way, based on the contents inside. The trick is – it shouldn't matter what you put inside the baskets, the outside should still look the same.”

“That’s why we only ever use baskets that have structural integrity. They will maintain their shape year after year, regardless of what is stored in them!”

Many of us are guilty of buying floppy, flimsy storage containers because they're cheap. But while these beauties might look nice in-store, they usually won't improve your home décor once you're using them. And there is a better way. As Larisa Bright and Pam Meluskey explained above, decorative storage containers need structural integrity above all else. But it doesn't stop there.

Bright and Melusky shared their list of DO’s and DON’Ts for basket purchasing, and we’ve highlighted them below:

  • DO look for materials that maintain their shape.
  • DO consider the depth of your shelves. For a sleek look, baskets should never hang off the end of a shelf.
  • DO consider what is being stored in the baskets. If clothing, consider baskets with a liner, so no clothes get snagged.
  • DO consider basket shape. If you’re looking to micro-categorize items within a basket, consider square or rectangular baskets so inserts can lay flush inside. Save the round baskets for larger items or one single category that does not need any division.
  • DON’T use slouchy canvas baskets that will flop or lose their shape.

Your home will never be the same if you master the art of using baskets to capitalize on and improve the storage space available to you. From under bed and closet storage to kitchen and entryway storage, there's nowhere they can't neaten up your home.
