What Is a Sleeper Sectional?
A sleeper sectional is a hybrid between a sleeper sofa or sofa bed and a sectional sofa. Sleeper sofas have a pull-out bed consisting of a mattress and bed frame hidden inside the sofa, and sofa beds transform into flat sleeping surfaces. You’ll also see futons and trundle beds, which are similar to sofa beds. On the other hand, sectionals are sofas made of two or more pieces that configure to form a large, sometimes modular, seating option.
“A sleeper sectional can easily transform from a sectional sofa into a bed in just a few easy steps. This is a great option for those who love to host but may not have enough space for an entire guest bedroom."
“A sleeper sectional can easily transform from a sectional sofa into a bed in just a few easy steps. This is a great option for those who love to host but may not have enough space for an entire guest bedroom. By day, sleeper sectionals provide all the comfy, cozy seating you could want. By night, they effortlessly transform into a luxurious spare bed – perfect for when you need to host an overnight guest in a pinch,” explains Jessica Harris.
Nina Edwards Anker adds, “A sleeper sectional is typically L-shaped or U-shaped, modular, oversized, and available in versatile configurations to suit a variety of room layouts.”
Sleeper sectionals come in various styles, with some that feature a folded innerspring mattress or pull-out sleeper hidden inside and others that transform into a flat sleeping surface. Many sleeper sectionals are also modular, allowing you to add or remove pieces and change configurations, so they can grow with you when you move into a new space. Modular furniture is also perfect if you enjoy rearranging your rooms regularly, as it offers options you don’t have with other pieces.
What to Consider When Shopping for a Sleeper Sectional
“There are several things to consider when looking for a sleeper sectional for your space. Size, price, comfort level, and style are some of the most important. The way to go in 2023 is a modular sofa sleeper with storage! Multifunctional is everything,” Jessica Harris told Living Cozy.
We love Jessica’s emphasis on multifunctional furniture — after all, it’s hard to complain about having a modular couch, a bed, and hidden storage in one convertible sofa. Hidden storage compartments allow you to keep bedding and pillows for your guests out of sight but still close at hand, and you might have enough space left over to tuck away some seasonal decor, too.
Below, our industry experts have provided tips for finding the right size, configuration, mattress, cushion quality, and mattress size for your sleeper sectional.
Choose the Sectional Size and Configuration
Before you choose your sleeper sectional, design expert Jessica Harris recommends asking yourself the following questions:
- What is the size of your space? Measure the room (or area) carefully and write down the dimensions so that you have them on hand while you shop. And when you find a sofa you like, test its size in your room before purchasing by outlining the dimensions in masking tape on the floor.
- How many seats do you want? Consider the size of your household and the average number of guests you expect during special occasions to decide how many seats would be ideal.
- Do you prefer a sectional with a chaise lounge – if so, do you want it on the left or right? The best orientation depends on the layout of your room. If you move around a lot, check out chaise sectionals that switch between left and right-facing, and if you’d like more seating, consider a modular U-shaped sectional.
“Once you’ve determined the overall size, design, and configuration, you can begin to narrow down your search by the type and size of mattress and sleeper sectional style,” said Jessica Harris.
Mattress and Cushion Quality
“A good quality sleeper sofa will have a well-built frame and inner mechanism for ease of use. In addition, they generally come with one of three mattress types: foam, memory foam, or an innerspring mattress,” said Natasha Adams.
“An innerspring sleeper sectional may offer a bit more ‘bounce’ and feelings of support, while a memory foam sleeper sectional may feel a bit more contouring. Test out each type for yourself in a store and go with the one that feels most comfortable to you — if you like it, chances are high that your guests will, too,” added Jessica Harris.
Mattress Size
“You’ll also want to consider the size of the mattress in your sleeper sectional. Most sleeper sectionals will come with either full-sized mattresses or queen-sized mattresses. If the guests you plan on hosting overnight are couples — or you simply prefer the luxury of an extra-large sleep space — go with the queen. Otherwise, stick to the full, which will still provide generous room and comfort for adult individuals,” Jessica Harris advised.
How to Style a Sleeper Sectional
Once you’ve decided on a sleeper sectional, tested the dimensions to ensure it’ll fit in your space, and made your purchase, you’re ready for styling. The trick is to make it work as both a sofa and a bed, keeping the setup comfy at all times. Keep blankets, sheets, and pillows stored nearby to make it easy to set up the bed when you need it, and style the sofa with cozy throw pillows and blankets the rest of the time.
“My best tip when styling a sofa/sleeper is to keep it simple and minimal. Style with throw pillows that can also be used when styling the bed."
“My best tip when styling a sofa/sleeper is to keep it simple and minimal. Style with throw pillows that can also be used when styling the bed,” advised Jessica Harris. “A body length bolster pillow is one of my favorites! It can be styled on your sofa during the day and become a cozy body pillow at night.”
When it comes to styling a sleeper sectional when it's converted to a bed, “I recommend using large decorative pillows towards the top of the mattress to make it easier to sit up while on the bed,” recommended Ebonee Bachman. “You can also style the bed with throws and pillows that complement the room.”
