Customer reviews: 3 out of 5 with 1 review
"Love love this bed, but a regular king mattress does not fit. The bed frame still shows a huge gap so you can see the slats on every side (top, bottom, and sides). I've measured and it's just a very odd size. Just be warned, you will probably need a HUGE duvet to tuck in those gaps so it doesn't show. Also, pillows will fall down the crack," wrote one customer. "Still love the look, just not the best functionality-wise."

What is a Platform Bed?
Platform beds, aka panel beds, are popular in today's homes and throughout the world of interior design. They're not just a minimalist or modern thing, either — they come in styles ranging from minimalist to rustic, accommodating every mattress size you can imagine. But what sets them apart from other beds?
Some of these beds look like the mattress is resting on a stage-like platform in the room, as seen in the beautiful bedroom pictured above, while others use a simple bed base with wood slats to support the mattress. But they all share one thing in common: no box spring.
"A platform bed is a bed frame that doesn't require a box spring," explains Jess Harrell. "The mattress sits directly on the sturdy frame made of either metal or wood. A platform bed typically has a low profile and a more modern look than those that require a box spring."
Beyond making your bedroom Insta-worthy, platform beds offer a range of benefits. And if you're like most of us, you probably want to do your research before investing your hard-earned money in a new bed frame. We get it! To help, we've highlighted what the experts had to say about the benefits of a platform bed below:
Lower Costs
"With a platform bed, you don't need to purchase a box spring, which means you save money or have more to spend on the frame itself. In addition, a platform bed creates a cleaner and more streamlined look," said Jess Harrell. "And there's no ugly box spring to cover with a bed skirt or box spring cover, which means more money in your pocket."
Practical
Platform beds are more practical than you might initially think. For example, many options feature storage drawers underneath the frame, perfect for small-space living. And since they don't require a box spring, they make moving day more manageable by reducing the number of oversized items you'll need to take.
"Platform beds are incredibly sturdy and capable of holding a lot of weight," added Grace Baena. In addition to holding more weight than other bedroom furniture, they're less likely to get jostled around and damage your floors.
Aesthetic Appeal
"With traditional beds, the added height of a box spring usually means that a good bit of the headboard is hidden," Jess Harrell told Living Cozy. "A platform bed looks more proportional, with less height to obscure the headboard."
"Platform beds have also become more popular appearance-wise in recent years, with a ton of different stylistic designs to choose from," said Grace Baena.
Can Any Mattress Go on a Platform Bed?
Platform beds can work with any mattress, as long as it's a comfortable height and adequately supported by the base. Platform beds come with base options ranging from solid to adjustable slats, so you'll likely find an option that works well for your mattress and your tastes.
Here are some things to consider depending on the type of mattress you choose:
Hybrid mattress: Hybrid mattresses typically feature pocket coils and latex or foam, and they work well with solid platform bed bases or very close-set slats (<2.5" apart).
Latex mattress: Latex mattresses require a sturdy bedframe to support their heavy weight, and platform bed frames are an excellent solution. They can work with solid and slatted bases, as long as the slats are close-set (<6" apart).
Memory foam mattress: Memory foam mattresses often require a solid base to keep the warranty intact, as they work best when supported evenly. Many platform bedframes feature a solid base to accommodate this type of mattress. If you use slats, you want them very close together (<2.5" apart) to ensure good support.
Innerspring mattress: Innerspring mattresses usually work best with box springs — using an innerspring mattress without a box spring can sometimes void the warranty. If you use an innerspring mattress on a platform bed, opt for a solid base or a slatted base with close-set slats (<6" apart).
Remember, your mattress is an investment, and you don't want to toss it on the cheapest frame you can find on Amazon — you want to protect it (and your spine) for years to come. When in doubt, check your mattress's warranty before choosing your bed frame.
