What Should You Look for in a Quality Dining Table?
Quality dining room furniture starts with materials. For instance, wood dining tables, like those composed of solid pine or oak, typically boast longer lifespans and more durability than dining tables made from mdf, plastic, or plywood.
It’s also helpful to consider your lifestyle when weighing the quality of various dining tables. If you have kids or host lots of dinner parties, for example, “You’ll also want to find [a dining table] that is easy to clean and scratch-resistant,” advises Katie Simpson, senior interior designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors, “Epecially if your table will be getting heavy use from things like kids doing homework or hosting lots of dinner parties.”
If you’re worried about scratches and spills, then glass-top dining tables, which are easy to wipe clean, are a great option. You can also add your own glass top to a wood dining table to add a layer of protection between the wood and any spills and scratches.
How Do You Work Out What Size Dining Table Can Fit in Your Space?
The best way to ensure you invest in the right size dining table is to take measurements. According to Kristin Patrician, owner and principal designer at Dwelling Envy Interiors, “You want to give yourself a minimum of 28-30 inches of space from the edges of the table to any wall or additional home furnishings. This allows people who are sitting at the table to sit comfortably while also allowing others to pass by easily.”
You can also strategically pick your dining table’s shape if you want to create a little more space between the table and wall. For example, an oval dining table will offer a bit more room around the edges than a rectangular table of comparable size thanks to the oval table’s rounded edges.
